Itās not newsāwe, as a society, have an addiction. This addiction causes withdrawal, salience, difficulty focusing, boredom, and dopamine dysregulation, just to name a few (of many) adverse side effects. Itās readily available, has become vital to everyday life, and is probably within your reach at almost every moment of the day.
Youāve probably caught on to what I’m referring to. Our smartphones have begun to shift from a tool to aid communication to a drug that helps us escape reality. Every time you pick up your phone to scroll, you reward your brain with a little spike of dopamineāwhich sounds great, right? Who doesn’t want a little dopamine hit? The problem lies in the dysregulation that occurs with constant, tiny dopamine hits throughout the day. What goes up must come down. This roller coaster of dopamine highs and lows causes the addiction and keeps us reaching for our phones every few minutes.
Study after study (such as this one from the National Institutes of Health) shows that decreased screen time increases overall well-being. Itās for this reason that we at Power Life ask you to store your phone in a locker or cubby outside of the studio space. (Itās not just because weāre being mean!) We know this is a challengeāafter all, we just said we all share this addictionāso why do we ask? There are a few important reasons:
Nervous System Reset:
The dopamine roller coaster can fry your nervous system. We offer you 45 minutes to an hour to move in tandem with your breath, bring awareness to your body in space, get your heart rate up, and enjoy the community around you. Essentially, youāre hitting the reset button on your nervous system. Exercise gives you endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrineāhormones that make you happy! (Happy people just donāt shoot their husbands!) Re-regulating these hormones leads to better mental health and overall well-being.
Safety:
Your safety in class is our number one priority. If you’re distracted by a phone notification, you might miss a cue from your instructor that was intended to keep you safe in the exercise.
Respect for Your Fellow Studentsā Space and Privacy:
When you post photos or videos in class, you donāt have your fellow studentsā permission to put them online. (Just look at what happened at that Coldplay concert!) The students around you have chosen to be in a screen-free space, and we ask that you respect that.
Respect for Your Instructor:
Every instructor at Power Life works hard to create a welcoming space. They spend hours crafting sequences and playlistsāwe ask that you be present and honor their effort.
Community:
Donāt rob yourself of the chance to meet someone new! The community at Power Life is second to none. Youāll thank yourself for leaving your phone in the locker room and connecting in real time. (You can always grab their number after class!)
We truly appreciate you respecting the no-phones-in-the-studio policy and canāt wait for you to experience what just a little time away from screens can do for you.
Have you cut back on screen time in other areas of your life? Let us know how you did it and what itās done for you in the comments!

Kirk was working 80-hour weeks and wearing his shoulders as earrings when he found yoga in 2005. Forever the competitive athlete, he loved the physicality of yoga. When the spiritual and philosophical side of yoga were exposed to him, Kirk was hooked. Yoga provided him with what other activities couldnāt -- the ability to foster the benefits of practice both on and off of the mat. Yoga was something that Kirk could bring into all aspects of his life.
Kirk knows that yoga can be intimidating, so he crafts a class that is playful and inviting, while still being challenging and safe. His creatively planned classes build strength and flexibility in your body and mind while establishing clarity, giving you more confidence to overcome obstacles in your life, and keeping you injury-free. His classes are themed with a message that is relatable and will inspire you to take it with you off your mat. Kirk has been teaching yoga since 2008 and lead his first teacher training in 2012. Where Kirk truly shines is in coaching, developing and bringing out the best in others.
Kirk enjoys traveling (40+ countries to date!), snowboarding, and cherishes time with his wife and two daughters.
Christen Bakkenās yoga journey began in 1998 in a Bikram studio that provided a safe and secure place to practice. She saw the yoga mat as a place to remember her purpose and a place to play. As she continued her studies and began her journey to teaching in 2006, Christen infused yoga classes with devotion and the yoga mat became a place of personal transformation and healing. Her classes are filled with laughter, song, sweat, and usually heart openers. In 2013, Christen began training yoga teachers. This is the place where she finds the most joy - in community with folks looking to grow and be of greater service in their homes, on their mats, and in the world. Over the years, she has led trainings in Denver, the Midwest, Florida, and now abroad. She has trained in continuing education modules, 200-hour, 300-hour, and 500-hour programs. Beyond the mat, Christen is a passionate adventure seeker - she loves to bike, snowboard, and spend time with her husband and pups. She sees each day as a blessing and hopes to remind all who interact with her of this truth.
