Being in the Midwest, you never know when fall is going to come. Every year it seems to go from summer right to winter overnight. Luckily this year we seem to get some transition time with temps in the 50s and 60s as the leaves start to turn color. As cliché as it sounds, it really is the best time of the year!
In addition to changing out the tank tops for sweaters and shorts for jeans, it’s also a great time to take inventory of your beauty products to make sure your skin is ready for the change in seasons. With cooler temps often comes dry everything – lips, hair, skin, you name it! Before the current temperature lows become the highs in the dead of winter, check out some of these popular products (including my favorites!) to make your transition smooth.
Lips. The #1 sign that it’s getting cooler outside are dry lips! The summer humidity fights off chapped lips, but as soon as the temps drop below 50, your lips will let you know they need extra help! I have two holy grail products I live by – both of which have gotten a lot of positive reviews. At night, I swear by the Laneige Lip Mask. As someone who has to have a fan on regardless of the outside temps, this lip mask ensures that my lips don’t dry out overnight and goes on so easy and smooth! During the day, I love the Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher. Fair warning, this has a slightly higher price point but seriously lasts forever as a little goes a long way. In addition to how hydrating this is, it also stay on for a long time compared to other chapstick, so I don’t feel like I have to constantly reapply throughout the day.
If you’re looking to add a bit of color to your lips while also hydrating, The Dime Beauty Tinted Lip Balm is the best of both worlds! It has a subtle hint of color, tastes great, and also goes on so smooth without feeling too sticky on your lips. It is really lightweight and a great solution to feeling like you have to layer on lipstick/gloss AND a chapstick of some kind.
Skin. Another one of my personal favorites! I swear by the Olay Regenerist line for face moisturizer. This is great for morning and night use, and while it’s a thicker moisturizer, it melts right into your skin and ensures dry skin doesn’t stand a chance! There are tons of brands with really fancy skincare lines, but Olay is a tried and true with a good price point for the results. For the rest of your skin, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream is a great starting point. This lotion has over 20,000 reviews on Amazon and averages 4.7 stars (83% giving it 5 stars) which is incredible for the price point. This lotion is also recommended with people for sensitive skin as it is fragrance free.
If you’re looking for something specific for under the eyes, Tarte makes Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment that looks/feels like lotion and helps with hydration, brightening, and firming under your eyes. What’s great about this is that it incorporates multiple things in one swoop under the eye (vs. having to use a serum, moisturizer, etc.). There are so many good options out there for skincare, but these are personal favorites I’d highly recommend starting with.
Lastly, if you are used to taking classes at Power Life then you are used to being barefoot at all times of the year, winter included! Being barefoot, wearing sandals, the cold weather (and a lot of other things!) can lead to feet that you’d rather leave in socks 24/7. Knowing that that isn’t feasible, you can also pick up a good foot peel for an at home spa night! Any beauty store has various options, but this one is a great option if you’re looking for a good reset to get rid of dead skin! I know, I know – gross! But this is one of those things that you’ll thank me for later!
Hair. With cold weather comes hat and beanie season! This on top of your scalp already being a bit drier due to the weather can lead to more brittle hair. A solid leave in conditioner can be a good starting point to fix dry hair but can also lead to building up a residue that’s also hard to get rid of. As someone who lives and dies by dry shampoo, Living Proof has proven time and time again to create lightweight products that have solid results. The Healthy Hair Perfector is a trio of helping restore shine, addressing dead ends (looking at those that consistently use heat on their hair!), and also help prevent heavy frizz. It’s one of those products that is great for winter but can carry you all the way through the stifling summer humidity.
No matter if you’re a religious Ulta, Sephora, Target, Amazon (or other!) shopper, there are tons of beauty options out there to help with the transition from warmer temps to the frigid Midwest winter. Fall is the perfect time to do your research, find what works, and begin to implement before the real cold kicks in. Hopefully these product recommendations are a good starting point and help point you in the right direction to solving dry skin, lips, and hair!

Kirk was working 80-hour weeks and wearing his shoulders as earrings when he found yoga in 2005. Forever the competitive athlete, he loved the physicality of yoga. When the spiritual and philosophical side of yoga were exposed to him, Kirk was hooked. Yoga provided him with what other activities couldn’t -- the ability to foster the benefits of practice both on and off of the mat. Yoga was something that Kirk could bring into all aspects of his life.
Kirk knows that yoga can be intimidating, so he crafts a class that is playful and inviting, while still being challenging and safe. His creatively planned classes build strength and flexibility in your body and mind while establishing clarity, giving you more confidence to overcome obstacles in your life, and keeping you injury-free. His classes are themed with a message that is relatable and will inspire you to take it with you off your mat. Kirk has been teaching yoga since 2008 and lead his first teacher training in 2012. Where Kirk truly shines is in coaching, developing and bringing out the best in others.
Kirk enjoys traveling (40+ countries to date!), snowboarding, and cherishes time with his wife and two daughters.
Christen Bakken’s yoga journey began in 1998 in a Bikram studio that provided a safe and secure place to practice. She saw the yoga mat as a place to remember her purpose and a place to play. As she continued her studies and began her journey to teaching in 2006, Christen infused yoga classes with devotion and the yoga mat became a place of personal transformation and healing. Her classes are filled with laughter, song, sweat, and usually heart openers. In 2013, Christen began training yoga teachers. This is the place where she finds the most joy - in community with folks looking to grow and be of greater service in their homes, on their mats, and in the world. Over the years, she has led trainings in Denver, the Midwest, Florida, and now abroad. She has trained in continuing education modules, 200-hour, 300-hour, and 500-hour programs. Beyond the mat, Christen is a passionate adventure seeker - she loves to bike, snowboard, and spend time with her husband and pups. She sees each day as a blessing and hopes to remind all who interact with her of this truth.
