Stand Your Ground

By Annika Peick

So, yes, we’re all spending more time at home right now. But that doesn’t mean we’re all sitting around eating bonbons. (Side note, where did that phrase come from? Anyone ever actually had a bonbon? Please let me know what they taste like.) Whether you’re an essential employee still going into work, or you have a full-on work from home set up, or you have kiddos to help educate, or you’re one of the millions of people affected by COVID-19 in some other way, it’s easy to lose your head. As we take things day-by-day – sometimes even minute-by-minute – it’s important to find some strategies you can use to calm your mind and quiet the noise. I’m not expert, but I do care A LOT about helping others. So, here are a few ways I’ve been coping with the madness:

  • Turn your to-do list into a “Look at everything I did!” list: Each night before you go to bed, make a list of 3-5 things you accomplished that day. You’ll be amazed at how this slight mind shift can uplift your mood. You might even start to notice you’re more productive the next day!
  • Sing (+ Dance) It Out: Stay with me here. I am by no means the next Whitney Houston, but singing and dancing can be a great way to clear your mind of stress and embrace the present moment. Whether you belt one out in your car (this is my personal fave), in the shower, or while you make dinner, it doesn’t really matter. Hit some high notes and let your body move! (If you want some guidance on dance, I hear Tik Tok has some really great ones making the rounds right now… Just saying.)
  • Check Your Tech: When we see photo after photo of other people’s lives, it’s easy to pick ours apart with a fine-toothed comb. Yes, someone probably has a more streamlined home office. And yes, some people are using this time to refine skills or learn new ones. But remember, not everything you see on social media is the whole story! Technology is great, just be mindful of when it creates a spiraling, negative effect on your mood.
  • Move Your Body: With so much going on, it can be easy to put your physical practice on the back burner. That’s where Power Life comes in! Remember to check out Power Life LIVE on YouTube for FREE classes and workouts you can do from home.

I feel I should say this again… I am not a mental health professional, so please remember to seek help if you feel you need it. Tele-therapy is a real and wonderful thing, people! What are some tricks you use to keep yourself grounded and present? Sound off in the comments.
