The Power Life Foundation

By Power Life

At Power Life, community has always come first. It’s what fills our studios, fuels our instructors, and keeps us showing up, for ourselves and for one another. The Power Life Foundation is our way of breaking down the barriers that keep people from experiencing what yoga can do for their mind, body, and sense of belonging. Whether you’ve been with us for years or are just hearing about us for the first time, we want you to know that you are welcome here, and The Power Life Foundation is proof of that.

Curious about what the Power Life Foundation stands for and how we operate in your community? We’ve answered a few top level questions below.

The Power Life Foundate’s Mission

  • What is the Power Life Foundation, and why was it created?
    • The Power Life Foundation was created out of a simple but powerful belief, that everyone deserves access to the mental and physical benefits of yoga. We recognize that barriers exist for many communities, and we wanted to do something about it! We offer several weekly free classes in our studios but wanted to extend beyond our physical spaces. The Foundation funds teacher training scholarships to students who wish to complete their certification but may not have the means to. And more instructors mean more access to yoga in our communities. Additionally, we partner with local charities and non-profit organizations to bring awareness and donations to them through our yoga practice.
  • ‘How does the Foundation align with Power Life’s overall mission and values?
    • At Power Life, our core belief is simple: you are accepted, seen, empowered, safe, and supported – no matter who you are or where you are in your practice. The Foundation exists because those promises shouldn’t stop at our studio doors. By funding teacher training scholarships, offering free classes, and partnering with community organizations, we’re working to extend that same sense of belonging to anyone who has ever felt yoga wasn’t meant for them.

What is the impact?

  • Who does the Foundation primarily serve?
    • We focus on our local communities, groups and individuals who typically face barriers to accessing yoga and basic needs. By investing in teacher training scholarships, we’re not just serving individuals, we are equipping them to share yoga with the people around them.

Connection

  • How does the Foundation influence the culture within Power Life?
    • The Foundation reminds our team and members that yoga is a practice for everyone. We have that responsibility to share it as widely as possible. Our students and staff share initiatives they are passionate about and together we build how the Foundation can help whether it is sharing information or sponsoring free classes to bring more awareness.
  • Why is it important for a fitness company to have a philanthropic arm?
    • As a company rooted in our communities, we have the opportunity to welcome all to our studio through free classes or share fitness beyond our studio walls by granting scholarships to those who wish to join our teacher training.
  • What role does volunteering play within the Foundation?
    • Volunteering is how our students or staff show up for our community in a greater way. We highlight non-profit organizations who may need more volunteers to keep the operation moving. Additionally, our team outings focus on giving our time and energy back to these same organizations.

Giving

  • How can members of the community support the Foundation?
    • The simplest way is to donate – 100% of every dollar goes directly to funding teacher training scholarships and programming. Beyond that, staying vigilant in spreading our free class opportunities to ensure the community knows they are welcome no matter their level of yoga or fitness!
  • Where do donations go, and how are they used?
    • Every dollar donated goes toward teacher training scholarships and creating opportunities for people to practice yoga across the cities Power Life serves. There are no administrative cuts – it all goes directly to the mission.

The Power Life Foundation exists to ensure that the life-changing benefits of yoga reaches everyone – regardless of circumstances. Interested in learning more? Feel free to reach out to foundation@powerlife.com and a member of our leadership team will be in touch!

About Kirk:

Kirk was working 80-hour weeks and wearing his shoulders as earrings when he found yoga in 2005. Forever the competitive athlete, he loved the physicality of yoga. When the spiritual and philosophical side of yoga were exposed to him, Kirk was hooked. Yoga provided him with what other activities couldn’t -- the ability to foster the benefits of practice both on and off of the mat. Yoga was something that Kirk could bring into all aspects of his life.

Kirk knows that yoga can be intimidating, so he crafts a class that is playful and inviting, while still being challenging and safe. His creatively planned classes build strength and flexibility in your body and mind while establishing clarity, giving you more confidence to overcome obstacles in your life, and keeping you injury-free. His classes are themed with a message that is relatable and will inspire you to take it with you off your mat. Kirk has been teaching yoga since 2008 and lead his first teacher training in 2012. Where Kirk truly shines is in coaching, developing and bringing out the best in others.

Kirk enjoys traveling (40+ countries to date!), snowboarding, and cherishes time with his wife and two daughters.

About Christen:

Christen Bakken’s yoga journey began in 1998 in a Bikram studio that provided a safe and secure place to practice. She saw the yoga mat as a place to remember her purpose and a place to play. As she continued her studies and began her journey to teaching in 2006, Christen infused yoga classes with devotion and the yoga mat became a place of personal transformation and healing. Her classes are filled with laughter, song, sweat, and usually heart openers. In 2013, Christen began training yoga teachers. This is the place where she finds the most joy - in community with folks looking to grow and be of greater service in their homes, on their mats, and in the world. Over the years, she has led trainings in Denver, the Midwest, Florida, and now abroad. She has trained in continuing education modules, 200-hour, 300-hour, and 500-hour programs. Beyond the mat, Christen is a passionate adventure seeker - she loves to bike, snowboard, and spend time with her husband and pups. She sees each day as a blessing and hopes to remind all who interact with her of this truth.
